CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Why are you acting weird?” Alex asked Daniel the next day in gym class. They were supposed to be playing soccer but had opted for watching from the bleachers instead.

“What? Weird? Not me.” Daniel stretched his legs out in front of him and avoided her gaze.

“You really don’t trust Josh, do you?” She looked around to make sure no one was close enough to overhear them.

Daniel cast a sidelong glance in her direction. “No, I don’t.”

“Daniel-” Alex tried to protest but he cut her off.

“You trust him. I get it. You think he’s your friend and maybe he is. But in my experience, his kind isn’t to be trusted. So, yeah I don’t trust him. Trust has to be earned, and he hasn’t done that… yet.” Daniel gave her a small smile that she chose to take as encouragement.

“He will. You might not trust him, but you can trust me. I know that I’m right about him.” She decided to take a risk and grabbed his hand. It wasn’t entirely unusual, since they had decided to convince others that they were a couple, but this time the gesture was a purely spontaneous act of affection.

Daniel sighed a defeated sigh and threaded his fingers loosely through hers. “Alright. This is your call, so what do you want to do about him?”

“I think we should use him. He claims that this Paladin exists, and he can help us find him. We need to find out everything Josh knows, and not just about the Paladin. He knows what the Rebels are planning, and about the portal. And he knows about the Shadow demons and he can help us fight them.” She tried to focus on Josh and how useful he would be but her mind kept wandering back to how nice her hand felt in Daniel’s.

“So we’ll be spending a lot of time with Josh. Excellent,” Daniel said with complete sarcasm. “I need to report to the Guardianship and tell them that he’s here. They need to know that he’s claiming to be on our side.”

“You should do that right away. After school, go see Bennett. I’m going to go back to the motel and see what I can learn from Josh.”

“Alone? I don’t think that’s a good-” Daniel’s voice was growing loud.

“Stop. You said this was my call, and this is what’s going to happen. You might be my Guardian, but we both know that I can take care of myself.” She fixed Daniel with her toughest game face and he reluctantly nodded his agreement.

“Geez, you two. Knock of the excessive PDA.” Baxter interrupted them as he clambered loudly up the metal bleachers. Alex couldn’t help but laugh at him. He was wearing the standard gym shorts but his gym socks were pulled up to his knees and a sweatband pushed his hair straight up. The effect was somewhat adorable in a nerdy, juvenile way.

“Is it possible for you to look any more ridiculous?” Alex asked as he took a seat in front of her.
